The audience that are drawn to Chase and Status’ music is obviously fairly huge, as a massive seller in the album charts and much sought after live act, the cross section of people that embrace their music would be varied anyway due to positive critical acclaim and much radio support. This aside however, they gain an even bigger audience (and perhaps a more loyal one) by collaborating with different contemporary artists from varied genres such as Dizzee Rascal and Tinie Tempah (both popular rap artists), The White Lies (Indie Rock) and Plan B (Pop/Funk). These collaborations mixed in with Chase & Status’ trademark Dubstep/D&B infused style of dance music, is so popular because it caters for all tastes of music, as well as giving it the hardcore/taboo edge that Chase & Status bring.
The advantageous position that Chase & Status have is that even if people are not immediately drawn to their new album or the singles within it, the majority are likely to come across one of the collaborations, including a popular artist from past few months, that they have listened to before, perhaps not making them a die-hard fan straight away, but at the very least making them open and appreciative of Chase & Status’ style of music. Such wide genre selection has drawn comparisons with worldwide Dance acts such as The Prodigy and Pendulum.
The overall age of listeners can vary from the young, to people of 35 and over. However, the core audience and the one that the songs need to appeal to the most is the audience of 16-25, as this is the group of people that buy the most CD’s and merchandise, download the most tracks and have the biggest say in whether Chase & Status stay popular and successful.
In our music video we addressed this main audience, by exclusively including people of this age range and putting them in a party setting that viewers will be able to relate to and identity with. The situation both the main characters are in involves a break down of relationships, this is also a common issue amongst teenagers, but this is a facet of the video viewers not only from the 16 to 25 age range, but anyone can relate to.
here is our magazine advert, we used this image to promote the idea of no more idols, we had many images of different colours in lighting and people behind the speaker set, we decided against having anyone behind the set to show the idea of no more idols, we also chose to have the scan lights in white so we could use this image like a black and white image, this makes the laser at the top of the magaine stand out and any injections of colour stand out showing their importance.we used a quote from the Guardian with a 5 star review, we made sure we placed the NME logo in the bottom right corner, we show the CD cover but in black and white, at the bottom we placed the chase and status website with the release date of the album. The factors we ensured to include create an effective advert in any magazine to attract the eye of readers and to keep the minimum of information on this advert to promote the album to already existing fans who will know of this album enticing them to buy it, the reason for this is Chase and Status are a very large commercialised band which do not need to promote themselves expressively through these magazine adverts but instead publicise their new art work.
Here we have a picture taken for our CD front cover, we thought about the album name "no more idols" and thought about ideas to show this, we decided we should take a image of someone in a hooded jumper looking down so you cannot identify the face, after a few different shots we decided we needed to make the whole CD cover more interesting rather than the single image of the man looking down, to do this we used the idea of fire to create diversity in the CD cover making the whole peice more interesting and eye catching.
To edit this image we used photo shop to darken the image, we then used a saturation filter and put an orange tint in the photo which make the flames stand out even more, we used a bold font to advertise this CD cover which connotes a slight aggressive look to it. As a final complete CD cover we are happy with the editing and outcome as it promotes Chase and Status under a light we believe they would promote themselves under.
here we have our CD backcover, we have coosen to use a simple idea by writing the song names in a bold font and inverting the image and placing it on the opposite side of the cover, we made sure we added the record labels involved in this album as these would be printed on a real album somewhere, we also for reality purposes added a barcode across the bottom of the image.
above we have the two inside covers, it is of an image of an
eye that on photoshop i have created a black and white filter,
i then used the equalizer to create this negative effect around
the eye, once this was done i faded around the eye and
created a new layer, with this new layer i coloured the eye in
a turquoise and lowered the opacity to create a colour filter
that allows the eye to look turquoise. the eyes will be on the
both inside covers, i inverted on image so that when the CD
case is open it will look like eyes looking back at you.
As you have seen from our shooting schedule there are four separate shoots in four different locations, here I will breakdown each shoot into there locations showing where they were shot and pictures from the shoot itself.
october 1st
Here is the location on Google maps the house is at point A
Here is the view of the house we filmed in from the front
Here is the room we had the speaker and lights set up in
October 2nd filming in Windsor
Here is the location we mainly filmed in Windsor moving from point A onwards towards Alexandra gardens.
Here is the area we shot Aaron walking home from, we have clips from around this area
October 8th Wargrave train station
Here is the location of the filming we carried out on the 8th of October
Wargrave train station
October 20th Windsor
In our final filming shoot in Windsor we filmed JJs walking scene, this was filmed on the purple stretch or road closest to the river between points A and B, we filmed across this whole stretch.
Here is the tunnel we filmed in
Here is an area we filmed JJ walking through by the river
Here is a picture the area we filmed JJ sat down by the river.
all these images have been taken where we have filme our music video, we have used maps to show where exactly these locations are, we have taken the pictures in the day time as a camera i have been using is not good at night (when we filmed)
We used two of our friends Aaron Harris playing the role of the boyfriend and JJ Moss, playing the role of the girlfriend, we choose these two for the character roles in our video because they have both been filmed before and are comfortable on camera, they are both easy to get hold of so any re shooting needed would be easy for us and they fit in perfectly with the stereotypes we would need within our music video, anyone else involved or seen in the video are extras which were at the party we filmed at. The cast :
The costume
The costumes we used had to be stereotypical of the genre of music, we found out in our three textual analysis essays that the clothing characters wore were extremely similar, the people often featured in these music videos and fans of the music often wear designer clothes, hoodies of some sort and sometimes flat caps, the people are often dressed to suit the urban youth look. To follow this theme we have Aaron dressed in a Ralph Lauren Barbour jacket, wearing jeans and an Abercrombie & Fitch top, this is similar to what he would wear daily so is easy for us to create this costume and for him to feel comfortable in it. JJ we have dressed in a particular way where she is always wearing a hoodies, we have done this because she is being treated badly on many occasions and it shows her enclosed feelings and a sense of hiding away from these problems, The hood is kept up throughout the video until the final few shots where she announces “its over” to Aaron ending their relationship, showing a release of freedom for her. Other than the hoodie JJ is dressed in a standard stereotypical manor, in jeans and a top.
The props
The party scene we have done in our film was a scene I was not looking forward to filming as we would have to set up the speakers and lighting for the party as our props whilst playing music and we would also have to film at the same time, I perceived this to be very difficult but we asked a friend Ollie Webster who was part of our group last year to sort out the music and lighting whilst we focused on filming, this made the scene easy to film and the scene looked very good on camera due to the props we had used.
The props we used in our film made particular parts of our scenes a lot harder to create, for example the idea of having seven clocks appearing on the wall meant I needed seven clocks and I happened to have none at home so out came the kindness of my neighbours as I asked people up and down my street to borrow their clocks for filming. Not only did I find a problem with getting the clocks I then needed to find a way to hang them on the wall, a quick trip to B&Q and we had solved the problem, either way the use of these props made creating the scene a lot harder than I had first thought. I also encountered the problem of I was borrowing the clocks for a few hours and once I had taken them down I would not be able to replace them back on the wall accurately, this meant I had to complete all of the filming in those few hours and to make sure we didn’t need to refilm this scene we did many shots and a lot of over filming to give us a lot of footage.
The only other props we used was mobile phones to show the interactions and texting between Aaron and JJ (boyfriend and girlfriend). These props were easy to get hold of as they already both owned phones and the scenes involving texting were easy to film.
Here is the risk assessment for the filming that we have done for our video “Time” by Chase & Status, our video as a whole is based within the medium risk category, this is due to the fact a large part of our video is based at a house party, this brings in many aspects of potential risks and hazards for us as we film. The party atmosphere meant we would have to keep all equipment safe, we had to be specific about our filming shooting short sharp clips so that we did not get people ‘showing off’ for the camera or drinking too much, as shown above to outweigh these measures we ensured everybody knew we were filming early on, we filmed selectively to avoid attention seeking and these measures as far as we were concerned fulfilled their needs as we did not have any problems with the above hazards. We filmed in Windsor for two scenes Aaron (the boyfriend) scene and JJ (the girlfriend) scene, both these occasions were low risk with little to no measures needed to ensure the safety of our cast and those around us. The Wargrave scene we shot was a medium to high risk scene, it was completed very safely with the measures taken out to ensure the safety in this scene. The scene is at a train station with JJ sitting on the platform with her legs over the side and is by far the most potentially dangerous scene. To avoid this danger we used a train station such as Wargrave because the train only passes once every half an hour, we checked the train times to ensure this and waited for a train to pass giving us a half an hour window to film. Throughout the filming of our music video we used appropriate procedures to ensure the safety of ourselves and those around us and completed our filming successfully and safely.
Above we have our shooting schedule, we planned right from the start to film as early as possible to get onto editing to create the best possible video we can and here we show we have our video shoots very close to each other allowing us to be editing from 20th of October giving us over a month to edit our video. This has given us a massive advantage as we can utilise our time to make an effective music video playing around with different ideas and editing techniques to create the best video possible. As you can see above in the people section it shows our two main characters featured within the video “time” Aaron Harris (the boyfriend) and JJ Moss (the girlfriend).
The idea behind these first shots is that it will show the boyfriend Aaron sat at a party whilst his girlfriend is at home waiting for him, this is an often occurance and she is getting fed up with it, the song name is called "Time" and to emphasise the time passing by we will use many clocks to create a collage of clocks on the wall as time goes by.
here the shots will show the viewers the two sides to the story as it will show the texts messages to and from the couple, it shows Aaron lying about what he is doing as he is at a party and the girl at home waiting for him, this is supposed to get the viewers to empathise with the girl putting Aaron under a negative light.
here we will see the girl getting more and more fed up drawing a heart bleeding, this will match the lyrics in the song as the lyrics "bleeding heart wont make it" the visuals of this drwn heart will be shown, finnaly she gets so annoyed she throws this drawing away as she leaves the room and then the house, a shot will also show the where abouts of Aaron at this party.
here we will see images of the girlfriend mainly on her journey as she leaves the house, we will see her going past the river and sitting down untill she makes it to the train station, these shots will be longer in duration through the slower part of the song, these clips shouls allow the viewer to empathise and create imagery of how she is feeling, it will cut back to aaron at a party to express the situation they are in as he ignores her and lies to her again for a party.
Here we will see the ending to the video , this will show once the party is finished Aaron will text his girlfriend something in which she replies something like dont bother coming home, at this point Aaron will ask why? when he recieves a reply saying its over ! , the ending will be a shot of the moon fading out slowly showing shes broken free from their relationship.
Guns and Roses are a very well known and established band, Their CD cover expresses this as around the main centre image it is blank and nothing is used around the outside of this image to promote the band anymore. The centre image shows two guns with two roses with the vines of the roses wrapping around the two guns, This image is a literal translation of their name from writing to an image, This I assume was used because the CD is Guns and Roses greatest hits, there is not a specific theme they are following for the album and this has given them the opportunity to promote their own name on their CD cover in this image form. The CD cover has a black and grey theme to it as almost everything is in black and grey, this allows the Roses which are in colour to stand out very boldly with the strong red and green colours, this draws your attention to the centre image ignoring the space around the outside. The typography shows a very bold text which stands out but still has its sleak slim effect, the particular guns used in this image you would imagine to be very old, they have that western ‘cowboy’ style to them and the writing used almost seems to copy this theme a you could imagine this type of writing on the classic ‘Wanted’ posters. The grey background has this wavy gradient to it where the grey fades into black at particular areas around the CD cover across the edges, I think the grey background is meant to almost look like metal as it has the brushstrokes look across the background making it seem like a metal material, the gradient fills make it also seem this way and the text of “Greatest Hits” seems like it has been engraved onto the CD cover. Overall this is a very effective CD cover used to promote the Band through an image for their greatest hits CD.
The cover for Metallica’s album uses a piece of artwork created by ‘Andres Serrano’ and is entitled “semen and blood III” The singer James Hetfield expressed his dislike for this album cover and the inspiration behind it but the guitarist and drummer lars and kirk were very into abstract art at the time and James Hetfield stated “I think they knew it bugged me and the cover for load was just a piss take so I let them do what they needed to do” This album cover shows that the Band Metallica are so big they have no need to promote themselves in their album covers, with conflict about the ideas behind the cover they still published it and used this artwork. The image is of semen and blood between two slides of Perspex, the album cover is edited in no difficult way it shows the image tilted slightly to the side, with the album name “load” and the band’s name Metallica at the top. The cover uses a black background using no kind of gradients, the typography is very stereotypical of the genre and of this band as they often use bold ‘in your face’ writing. The layout of this CD cover is extremely simple, this cover is so basic it just shows how much a band of this size dont need to promote themselves through there Albums, as James Hetfield said “its a piss take” and they still produced it. The CD cover is simple but effective using mainly someone else’s artwork to promote their image.
we have been planning our music video and our main idea has been to use the song by Chase and Status featuring Dellilah called 'Time' we have had a few ideas for the video. The video will be narrative based on a couple (boyfriend and girlfriend) that have been going out for a while and she is getting fed up of being left waiting for her boyfriend who seemingly dosent have the time for her, this will be shown by her waiting at home for her boyfriend to return but when he begins to lie saying somethings come up when hes at a party the girlfriend begins to become more and more aggitated until she decides this is it and walks out. The video will portray "Time" throughout to show time passing by as the boyfriend makes his way home early the next morning around 3, the video will show alternative images of the two (boyfriend and girlfriend) on their journeys as they seperate to show the different sides of the story, the video will finish with the girlfriend leaving him for what he is continuely doing.
This video is my third of 3 music video analysis’s , I have chosen the genre of Dubstep for this video as in my previous essays I have included drum and bass and electronica, the three genres I will be looking to base my video on are between drum and bass, Dubstep or electronica thus the reason for the genre choices.I have also chosen this video specifically because I am planning on using a narrative based music video. The music video Kickstarts (Bar 9 remix) conveys many characteristics of a Dubstep music video but is also unique within the story line of the narrative based video. The characteristics of a Dubstep video would convey with frequent cuts, short clips in context with the editing , extreme camera angles , The people shot within the video would have a particular dress sense of a youth related theme which is seen in this video. The editing , camera and mise en scene of the video is very stereotypical of a Dubstep video but to conflict that the narrative storyline to the video is counter stereotypical, For example a usual Dubstep video would be either performance based showing the artists live in a club or festivals, or narrative based but with a story line more related to clubbing, partying, drink and drug related, the general lifestyle for young adults who live this way. The video Kickstarts (Bar 9 remix) however shows a couple (boy friend and girlfriend) who are fighting for each other’s love against a gang of some sort for whatever reason but this is not explained.
The music video follows Goodwins theory very closely as almost constantly throughout the video the visuals have a strong relationship to the lyrics, in the opening seconds the lyrics say you want me to come over” and it shows the boy friend outside his girlfriend’s house, almost immediately after the use of shot reverse shot is used as the boyfriend looks into her eyes and the lyrics are “look into your eyes imagine life without ya”, This continues throughout the music video and is an effective technique to allow a viewer to enjoy the song to a more full extent, it gives the viewer the imagery to the song which makes it more memorable and interesting.
Goodwins theory has been continually used throughout as the music and visuals have a very strong relationship in this video. The opening to the song is very slow and downbeat, there are not a lot of changes in the beat and this is conveyed within the visuals, it shows the boyfriend walking slowly with very infrequent cuts to emphasise the low point in the song. The whole song uses the beat to control the speed of editing, for example at 3 minutes 54 seconds into the song there is a transfer from a downbeat section where the use of long clips and infrequent cuts are used but as the beat drops at 3 minutes 54 seconds there is suddenly the use of very frequent cuts, short clips and the camera has a clear change from a steady shot to a handheld shot where it is very hectic and all over the place showing the intensity of the situation.
The camera techniques used in the video are very interesting as it ranges from shots that are clearly taken on some sort of stand or tripod to shots which are taken by someone running with very shaky shots, this is interesting as it is very hard to get right when you take shots in this way, it can often look very tacky and poorly filmed but in this video they have got the right mix of fixed shots to handheld and it has come out very effective as it shows the intensity of the situations the characters are in and allows us as a viewer to empathy and relate to the situation as we watch almost making the viewer put themselves in their shoes.
The editing of this particular video is extremely dependent on the music itself, the visuals seem to change simultaneously with the beat throughout the song, this gives the visuals a particular feeling of rhythm throughout the video, it is a very well used technique that relates the music to the visuals in a way that the viewer can become more interested in the song and visuals as a package. The opening two shots are edited very well to fit the visuals to the music, not only does the first clip fade out as the second clip fades in, which is used well to show time passing by in this part of the video, the shot is facing the sun and this puts the man out of focus which brings him into the video slowly with the music as he fades into focus in the second shot. The use of this fading the new shot over the old one is used for the first 23 seconds until the screen fades to black and the use of the door opening is kind of like a wipe, these first 30 seconds use specific editing that give the viewer a feel of negative feelings, the music is slow along with the editing, the use of the fades over each shot give the feeling of time passing by and gives the viewer a ‘down feeling’ to this opening of the song.
Mise en scene is effective in this music video, it is important in all videos to create the right feel and vibe that the viewer would expect. The clothing is stereotypical of the age the people dress like young adults relating to their age, the most important clothing to create a character build up is of the gang within this video, the gang are initially wearing tights over their heads in the first scene to hide identity, they wear all black clothing, they are seen to be wearing jewellery, these are all associated stereotypical outfits a gang member would wear and it has been followed well in this video.
Overall the video is very effective, the video is narrative based it is easy to see the storyline, the visuals work very well with the music and it is an interesting video that would promote the artist in a positive way.
The picture here is hard to read due to bad quality on camera so here is the information:
Album title : No more idols
What genre is the track: Electronica
Artist record label : MTA records
Artist profile: Well known Drum & Bass / Electronica band, known worlwide for there work, both first and second albums were hits within the UK and abroad, the band are common headliners for large festivals and within the clubbing world across the globe.
Overview of target audience for artist: 16-25 year olds , there largest target audience is the groups above 18 as there main audience is people who are old enough to be clubbing and attending there gigs and festivals.
what structure of video will i be doing : Narrative
Synopsis of video: Girlfriend and boyfriend are living together but the guy often leaves the girlon her own as he dissapears off going pubbing and clubbing, the girl is often blown off for other things on the guys schedule (going out with his friends). The girl is sat at home waiting for her boyfriend to return from his night out, but as the night goes on she becomes more and more fed up with being treated in this way, at any point within the video you dont see the fullimage of the girls face until the end, the video will be shot in a dark room showing the girls depression as she begins to draw images such as broken hearts, these images will conflict with the shots of her boyfriend out drinking at pubs and partying, this continues to go on until the girl leaves the house leaving a note behind for her boyfriend that she is leaving, at this pouint he realises what hes lost as you see his anger at the break upand the girls insight to freedomand her own life as she leaves to lead her own life.
ideas for Digi Pack: The outside of the digipack both outer sides will show the girls side of the story e.g black colour pallet not alot going on, a fairly simple cover with a large print of the song title and the artists name "Chase & Status". The inner two sides of the digipack will show the other side to the story expressing the partying side to the video, this will show bright vibrant images of the boyfriend out partying.
Ideas for magazine advertisement : This will be a image showing mainly a bright vibrant image of the boyfriend out partying with potentially a slash across the top corner to show a dark image of the girl in a dark room.
Unlike my first post stating i will be working with Aaron Harris and Ollie webster there has been a change as i will be now working in a group with Tom Noakes and myself working under the same name of Cloud 9 productions creating a music video this year.
The Chase & Status single cover for the song “pieces” featuring Plan B has a simple colour pallet using only 3 colours within its colour scheme, this is often used in album covers and singles so in a shop on a stand with 100s of other albums it will stand out from other CDs, this will give it a higher chance of being sold. The name of the song is clearly printed across the centre of the cover against a blank black background to stand out as much as possible to catch the eye of passersby, The sales of CDs have dropped hugely due to piracy of records and therefore the sales of these records are vital and the artwork on a CD case must not only catch the eye of a passerby but must also convince them to buy it.
The name of the Artist is clearly stated above the song name, this is not as important as the song name, this is shown by the smaller writing in the same font but it has not been made to be cracking or crumbling, chase and status are a well established band and do not need a busy cover to advertise or promote themselves, any people looking to purchase the CD will recognise the album cover through the song name and its artwork. The word “pieces” is smashed and appears to be crumbling into pieces; the retro font makes the word seem like crumbling stone. This is an interesting font for chase and status to use and is easily recognisable; it is similar to common fonts used in the 70s. The font is bold and bubbly, Chase and Status would not normally idolise themselves in this light but they feature the artist Plan B which in his recent album he portrays himself in 70s scenes, his dress sense, the scene build up and sets shows this, a good example is in the music video “stay to long” where Plan B is dressed in a suit with dungarees in a dark dingy 70s pub. The unusual 70s font would of been used to emphasise the fact Plan B is featuring in this song.
The end of the word pieces is repeated in the top right and bottom left corner of the cover to complete this albums artwork. The video to this song is a narrative theme telling the story of how Plan B and his girlfriend break up, the crumbling of the writing on this front cover is used I believe to convey the crumbling of his relationship, the retro font makes the writing seem like stone, this may be an underlying message showing they had a strong relationship ‘like stone’ but now its begun to break down. This is very good example of a simple cover created in a clever way to have many underlying messages within it that can be pulled apart to show relationships between the song name and the artwork and the video and artwork.
I have chosen this video as it is within the genre of Drum and Bass, we will be looking to base our music video between the genres of Dubstep and Drum and Bass. The video shown here is dominantly a performance based video showing live performances of artists and this is commonly used for this genre within its music videos, This may be due to the fact live performances is where artists in these genres will be making the most money and to have a well edited exiting performance based video will entice fans and viewers of the video to go and see the artists live at any of their performances.
The genre of drum and bass has its own characteristics of large live performances at clubs and festivals, this is shown in this video of a live performance of the artists from chase and status and Tempa T at a festival. Drum and Bass is a growing genre throughout the world, it has recently become commercialised and is beginning to become a universal hit within clubs across the globe. The fact Drum and Bass has suddenly become so commercialised means it has a wide range of characteristics but mainly within the age bands of 18-25 (the standard age for clubbers in the UK). The genre brings along a huge fan base with similar characteristics, the population of this fan base will often be stereotyped into the image of urbanised clothing, well known brands, hooded clothing is common, this is the perceived look and is therefore a common stereotype within the genre.
There are no real significant relationships between lyrics and visuals, as you would expect in a performance video the artists when singing are in sync with the music with actions but within this video there are many parts showing other artists whilst a different artist is singing, this does not show any relationship between lyrics and visuals. The beginning to this video is a talking intro of all the artists back stage with Tempa T talking before it fades into the live performance, this was in sync with words and visuals and this backstage view gives fans an idea of what the artists are like on and off stage. Goodwins theory does not match this video well in the aspects of the relationship to lyrics and visuals due to the performance based video being a live performance, this shows the artists doing what they do on stage but is not acted out so visuals do not have a great deal of significance in relationship to lyrics.
The music is very upbeat, this is shown throughout the performance video with areas of extremely frequent cuts and short clips, this is used very well as it makes the viewer feel more in sync with the music and the environment giving imagery of what it would be like to be at this live performance. The music video also uses a good use of clips that involve filming whilst a strobe light is being used on stage, this makes it seem like their are frequent cuts and gives the video an upbeat feel to it due to the synchronised beat of the music and the flashing of the lights, this is the main relationship between music and visuals, this video has therefore been edited to match Goodwins theory here very well, the music relates to the visuals directly throughout the video as it uses frequents cuts and strobe lighting in upbeat areas of the song and less frequent cuts with simple cameras angles in the slower parts of the song.
The music video itself shows little of anything other than the performing artists, the crowd is shown frequently but not for long periods of time, this relates back to Goodwins theory ‘Notion of looking’ within this video it seems unlikely the artists are trying to objectify themselves but more show off about themselves and their skills. The video seems to of been edited and shot in a way to portray the artists in a particular light, The opening shots show all the artists talking and having a laugh, throughout the video there are shots of the artists backstage not performing, the artists are not instructed to avoid looking at cameras, they are even looking directly at them, this gives of relaxed, fun and chilled look about them, it shows the artists personalities rather than an acted scene which allows viewers to relate to them and attracts aspirers who would want to live this life style.
The video uses many different camera angles of the artists at one point going round every artists showing close ups which promotes themselves as an artist and a kind of brand. After close ups of an artist there is often a view of the crowd shown this gives the viewer a feeling of imagery again as they could imagine seeing the artists up close and being in that environment, a wide range of camera techniques are used from hand held at the beginning of the video to pans and tracking shots. The camera techniques used are made to emphasise the feel of being their live, the main shots are handheld shots, the clips are often not still shots with zooming in and out on artists and movement of the camera happensa lot during clips, this gives the viewer a feel of the busyness within the scene and gives an atmosphere to the video
Mise en scene is largely important throughout the video, the large set will obviously be there before as they are performing at the festival, the clothes worn by the artists would of been chosen in agreement with their record labels as they get a say in how the artists come across within these videos, The props used are obviously part of the set and not just for show as they perform live but the positioning of the artists the set up of the stage will of been specifically layed out to show all the artist in their own light.
The editing used throughout this video is stereotypical with this genre, the length of clips relates to the beat, the frequency of cuts is in conjunction with the music, the video shows areas where the saturation has been changed to create black and white images in parts of this video. The artists are all shown in the opening of the video and through the talking of Tempa T introduced in the opening seconds. The video shows every artist on stage repeatedly, but as usual live performance videos the main part of the video is based around the singers, Tempa T is shown a large amount as chase and status have featured him in this particular song. This particular video would of been very had to film and edit as there is only one chance, the song will not be redone as they are performing live meaning everything must be right first time and when it comes to editing all shots must be good enough and enough footage must be taken to fill the whole song with visuals, Due to this many filler shots are used in the editing of the film by showing a lot of back stage events.
The performance based video by Chase and Status “Hypest Hype” featuring Tempa T is very successful in promoting the artists live performances and through the well edited video is very good at enticing fans to come and see the artists live, The main income for many artists.
Skream & Example – shot yourself in the foot again.
Music video analysis
Firstly I chose this video Because it is a similar type of video to what I will be looking to do in my A2 course work, it is the same genre of music as I intend to use and the video is a narrative based video. We know the video is narrative based as it is used to show a story of a man on his birthday. The music videos images are typical of this genre, the music is the genre of Drum and Bass, this is often related to clubs as this is the most common place it is heard, it is related to nights out on the town drinking and going clubbing. This makes the music video stereotypical of this genre within the clubbing aspects.
The music video also shows characteristics of people who would listen to this genre of music and go clubbing aged 18 – 25, the similar dress sense for example hooded and urban clothing is common in a drum and bass narrative video, they obviously know the bouncers at the clubs as they walk straight past the ques shake bouncers hands and go in, this emphasises the type of people they are. The genre of drum and bass will commonly use a specific type of editing using frequent cuts, vibrant images and will often portray clubbing scenes, these characteristics will be shown in the camera angles using extreme angles and techniques to create wild imagery in the viewers eyes which will entice aspirers and people who relate to the partying and music scenes to go and see the artists at a live performance.
The mise en scene of a music video is very important or it could loose interest of viewers, the mise en scene must be similar to what the ‘fans’ will be used to for example as stated above the use of urban clothing, if the actors are not fitted to the stereotypical dress sense some people may not feel as custom to it, it will be harder for people to relate to and could potentially turn aspirers liking away. Not only clothing is important for this, props such as the girl at home to look realistic she has cooked dinner, she is dressed up nicely for her boyfriend and little things such as the man ‘picking up’ drugs, this is used as it is a common feature of some lifestyles when they go out pubbing and clubbing and allows people to relate to the music video.
The people seem stereotypical again of this genre, seen as a crowd who would take drugs and go clubbing , the first image seen in this video is of a man smoking what seems to be marijuana. Later on in the video the main character is seen meeting a drug dealer to pick up drugs with a sign behind him saying GAK which is known on the street as methamphetamine, cocaine or marijuana and is later on seen in the video as a powdered drug as he is seen taking it in the club.
The video is based on this man’s birthday and it is called shot yourself in the foot again as it is clearly showing him going out clubbing with friends whilst his girlfriend is at home who has cooked him dinner and seen setting a evening together for him, without telling his girl friend he goes out and the video shows the alternative clips of him pubbing and clubbing whilst she is at home. This has a relationship with the lyrics as many times the words “shot yourself in the foot again” is repeated. The lyrics are used throughout to relate to the visuals as the lyrics “keep walking on my friend” are used as he is seen walking the streets of the city and the lyrics “where’s he gunna go to” are used as his girlfriend packs his clothes into bin bags and chucks his clothes out the front door kicking him out of the house for what he’s done, this is all evidence of Goodwins theory showing the relationships between lyrics and visuals within the music video itself.
The music itself has a relationship with the visuals used, as the girlfriend gets more and more angry throughout the night the length of clips are shorter and more extreme camera angles are used. This emphasises the narrative video alongside the music. The clips also begin to go with the beat of the music with shots changing with every beat and the tempo of the music begins to regulate length of shots which is commonly used in music videos especially within this genre. Within goodwins theory he states that there is a strong relationship within music and visuals and this is seen strongly throughout the video especially towards the clubbing scene at the end as cuts become regulated by the beat.
Notion of looking another part of Goodwins theory is used thought the video, The boyfriend is made to look like a cheat, like he does not care for his girlfriend, as the girl is at home it idolises the man as a controlling character that is one minute interested in his girl and the next minute he hasn’t got a care in the world, this is cleverly shown throughout the video as the viewer sees him looking at texts but ignoring them, partying with friends, taking drugs and even pushed to the extent of him cheating on his girlfriend.
The music video is narrative based and is used to complement the single “shot yourself in the foot again” , this is a very effective use of this video as it promotes the single very well and promotes interest into the lifestyle and music of the two artists “Skream” and “Example” . The use of narrative videos is extremely effective as it brings the music to life almost setting a storyline to the music you listen to creating realistic imagery in your mind that aspirers can relate to. The use of this video will promote aspirers who would want to live this lifestyle and will interest the viewers into listening to the artists other music and will therefore increase record sales and album sales and may entice people to want to see the artists live, the main form of income for artists in the modern market due to piracy of music being so easy.
